You're having trouble connecting or setting up your Wyze Cam with a dual-band router. The connection fails, or your Wyze device can't find your network at all.
Your smart router is confusing your smart camera.
Most Wyze devices require a 2.4 GHz network connection to complete setup. If you have a dual-band router, or a router that combines or frequently switches between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, it can prevent your camera from finding and pairing successfully to the 2.4 GHz network.
How can I tell if my router is the culprit?
A lot of newer routers promote features like "Band Steering", "Smart Connect", or "Single SSID." This can be convenient for everyday use, but can cause issues for your Wyze Cam. This is extremely common with routers from internet service providers like Xfinity and AT&T.
Several routers that commonly have this issue:
- Xfinity / ISP gateways (XB6, XB7, XB8), AT&T BGW Series, Cox Panoramic Wi-Fi
- Mesh systems: TP-Link Deco, Google Nest Wi-Fi, Amazon eero, Netgear Orbi
- Routers with Smart Connect (ASUS AX/BE, Netgear Nighthawk AX, Linksys Velop and MAX-STREAM)
These routers are known to combine bands by default, requiring you to manually "split bands."
Wyze Mesh Router and Wyze Mesh Router Pro do merge 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and cannot be split. However, your Wyze Cam will always connect to a Wyze Mesh Router, and does not require splitting.
How can I fix this issue with my dual-band router?
Every router is different, so troubleshooting your settings and getting connected may take some trial and error. Here are some general troubleshooting tips that should help you get connected to your 2.4 GHz band.
Tip #1: Temporarily separate your Wi-Fi bands.
- Log into your router settings.
- Check your router's app or web interface for options like "Band Steering", "Smart Connect" or "Single SSID."
- Give your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks into separate names.
- Ex. "MyWiFi_2.4" and "MyWiFi_5G".
- Connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network and try setting up your Wyze Cam again.
Tip #2: Move farther from your router.
5 GHz networks have a shorter range. Try moving farther away from your router so your phone can try to connect to 2.4 GHz automatically.
Tip #3: Temporarily disable 5 GHz.
- Set up your router again, and disable the 5 GHz band if possible.
- Connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network and try setting up your Wyze Cam again.
- Once your Wyze Cam is connected, re-enable 5 GHz in your router settings.
Once setup is complete, your Wyze Cam should stay connected to the 2.4 GHz network—even after you switch settings back.
What if it's still not connecting, or I can't separate the bands?
If you're unable to connect your Wyze device, or are unable to split the bands, check your router manufacturer's or ISP's support site for more help.
